Cheap & Easy Way to NATURALLY Lighten Your Hair WITHOUT Dye (Using househould items)

The chemicals in hair dyes are strong and often extremely damaging to the condition of your hair. Here is an effective method of lightening your tresses at home that I have had success with. It took me from a light brown to a medium blonde in one sitting without the yucky harsh chemicals of bleach or dye. You can achieve lighter hair too by using a few items in your cupboard.

Disclaimer: Please take the current condition of your hair into consideration before applying any sort of chemical onto it. Always strand test first to ensure the color you acheive is desirable and to know how your hair will react before applying it to your entire head. The darker your hair, the harder it will be to lift, therefore you may not see a dramatic difference the first use. Use at your own risk, and be sure to have your parents' permission before doing this.


What you will need:

• Baking soda
• Hydrogen Peroxide (3%)
• Honey 
• Gloves
• Bowl + Spoon
• Blowdryer
• Plastic bag or shower cap
• Lemon juice (optional)
• Purple toning shampoo (optional)

Hydrogen peroxide is a natural lightener, and is great for other household uses like brightening laundry or whitening teeth. It it highly attainable and is available at all drugstores, often for less than $1. 
Baking soda will give the mixture a consistency as opposed to being drippy liquid. 
Honey and lemon juice are natural lighteners and will help activate the peroxide and therefore improve your results. I highly recommend honey for the best results.
The heat from the blowdryer will speed up the process.

How to mix:

• In a large bowl, pour in the hydrogen peroxide. I did not use exact measurements, I just measured by eye how much I thought I would need. 
• Next, sprinkle in the baking soda. Mix it until you get a yogurt-like consistency. 
• Pour in the honey and/or lemon juice. The more, the better (just don't go too crazy!)
• Once you are satisfied with the mix, you're ready to apply.

How to apply + process:

• With your gloved hands, you have the option of using an application brush or your hands to apply the mixture to your hair. I found it easier to use my hands.
• Section off your hair as you would in preparation to dye your hair. 
• After your hair is saturated, place the shower cap or plastic bag over your head and secure it well.
• Using your blowdryer, evenly distribute heat to your hair for the entire processing duration.
• I left the mix on my hair for 30 minutes, but how long you should leave it on YOUR hair depends. Be sure to check the color every 10 minutes and check for any breakage. Once your are satisfied, rinse, shampoo, and condition.

One thing you should know...If your hair is lighter, there is more of a chance that you will get funky brassy tones with this method, as will happen even with hair dyes as you go lighter. A purple toning shampoo such as Clairol Shimmer Lights should help you.
